Check if Orchestrator primary Runbook server fails over to second Runbook server

This post will describe how you can check that a Runbook server failes over to a second Runbook server when the first server goes down.

Start by creating a simple Runbook. This is how mine looks like.

Check if Orchestrator Runbook server fails over to second Runbook server1

Sleep 30 sec

Check if Orchestrator Runbook server fails over to second Runbook server2

Append Line C:\tmp\FailOverRunbook.txt

Check if Orchestrator Runbook server fails over to second Runbook server3

Start the Runbook and monitor that it creates a file on the primary Runbook server. Next start the Runbook again and stop the Runbook service on the primary Runbook server while the Runbook is running.

Check if Orchestrator Runbook server fails over to second Runbook server4

This should make the Runbook to fail over to the second Runbook server. After the Runbook is done check that a file has been created on the second Runbook server.

Don’t forget to start the Runbook service on the primary Runbook server when you are done.

    Hi Jonathan

Great things you write in your blog…!
One question arised when i read about failing orchestrators and runbooks.
We have several runbooks that run permanently on our runbook server. What will happen to them, if that runbook servers fails? Do they get automaticaly started on the standby one? Or do I have to start the manually?

    thanks and many regards,

    Reto

      Hi Reto,

So nice to hear that you have use for my blog 🙂

If you have one Runbook server and for example reboot it. All Runbooks that were running before the reboot will start again when the Runbook service starts. One thing to keep in mind is that all this Runbooks will start at their beginning and not where they were at reboot.

If you have more than one Runbook servers the running Runbooks will be transferred to another Runbook server. When they move they will start at the beginning again and not where they were before transferred.

      Hope this answers your question!

      Regards,
      Jonathan

Im rather new on Orchestrator and we are planning to set up a second runbook server since we use it for SCOM already, enriching alerts etc…
thats why my questing was about if one server fails the other will take over the jobs and start them there…
